We advise honestly. PIR insulates the most per centimetre and is ideal when space is limited. Glass wool is more affordable, breathable and has been the classic choice for years. Which option works best depends on the space under your roof, the Rc requirement and your budget.
PIR (polyisocyanurate) is a rigid foam board with an aluminium vapour barrier. High insulation value at minimal thickness, ideal when you want to preserve space under the roof. Often used in new builds and major renovations.
Great choice when renovating the roof at the same time, or with limited space under the roof.
Mineral wool installed between rafters or under the roof deck. Good insulation, breathable and fire resistant. The classic choice for Dutch attics and extensions, proven for decades.
Good option if you have enough space between the rafters and do not use the attic as living space.

Do you live in the province of Groningen or Noord-Drenthe? You may be eligible for substantial subsidy on your roof insulation. Through Nij Begun, homeowners in the earthquake reinforcement zone receive up to 100% coverage (max 40,000 EUR). Outside the reinforcement zone, this is 50% (max 20,000 EUR).
On top of that, you can apply for ISDE subsidy of 16.25 EUR per m2. These subsidies can be combined. For a roof of 80 m2 outside the reinforcement zone, you may end up paying as little as 1,300 EUR out of pocket.
